Mahraganat—which means ‘fairs’ in Arabic—is a boulevard song taste which has temporarily emerged from Egypt’s extra disadvantaged districts, unexpectedly embedding itself in Cairo’s city tradition. On this movie, director and digital musician Wael Alaa (who information underneath the title NEOBYRD) heads to the Egyptian capital’s Bulaq district—the epicentre of this burgeoning underground scene—to record the folk and puts in the back of this defiant new style.
“I didn’t plan to come across the artists in the back of this taste,” explains the Cairo-based filmmaker. “But, once I did, I spent a complete month development a cast courting with this various team.
