mann Jeff Mann: Wiccan, Pagan, Tattooed Poet tattoo

Jeff tells us:

I’ve been a Wiccan and pagan since I used to be a teen. As a result of my bloodlines are Irish, Scots, English, and German, I’ve taken increasingly more of an passion within the Celtic and Norse gods and goddesses as I’ve elderly. In 2003 I sat in on a graduate elegance at Virginia Tech, a path that occupied with Celtic and Norse literature, and I were given to learn The Elder Edda, The Prose Edda, and a host of Icelandic sagas. Those readings changed into the foundation for my 3rd ebook of poetry, Ash: Poems from Norse Mythology.

The hammer-wielding thunder god Thor is my favourite Norse deity. I like his warrior manliness, his earthiness, his energy, and his resolution to offer protection to the ones he cares for. I confirmed a number of Thor’s-hammer photographs to my tattoo artist, Shaun Carroll (@shaun.hotrodtat2) at Scorching Rod Tattoo in Blacksburg, Virginia, and he got here up with the design, entire with Celtic knots and Wiccan pentagram.

Jeff shared the next poem, as neatly, which at first seemed in Chelsea Station and in his assortment A Romantic Mann:

Commemorates all men and women
    ever oppressed and persecuted
as a result of their homosexuality.

Purple triangles of granite.
    3 of them, interlocked,
jutting out into the busy waters

of Keizersgracht.  A easy
    stone shelf we step onto
gingerly, as though it had been an edge

of rosy ice that may damage free
and floe us off to sea.  About our toes,
        white wreaths of lilies, peony-

scatter, wilting commemorations
like the ones rose bouquets tenderly
laid in regards to the statue of Anne Frank

simply across the nook.  Right here, plants
proportion the distance with cigarette ends,
bottle caps, candle butts, the pearly swirls

of wax lengthy cooled.  (Semen’s
    molten moonstone sealing in combination
the bellies of fortunate fanatics, tears freezing
a widower’s beard.)   In a security
born of sheer accident, in this purple
        promontory flanked through the canal’s

wake and flux, we contact historical past’s
    spilled tallow, calla lily recollections
now not our personal: the lesbian stoned to demise

within the public sq., the faggot-
pyre heaped in regards to the sodomite,
            ashes shoveled from the cooling

furnaces of Buchenwald.
The ones deaths turn out to be our whetstone.
Upon this purple granite prow sword-sharp
and sheer as honed will,
we take a seat in combination, knee to knee,
        within the Dutch solar’s imprimatur,

dipping frites into mayonnaise,
    feeding every any other.
Easiest photograph alternative for the ones

in excursion boats who go with the flow through.  They concentrate to
the tale of the Homomonument, level us out—

        dwelling examples!—goal their cameras, smile.
